People with diabetes, who are considered
a 'high-risk category' by health insurance providers and therefore often find
it difficult to get a proper medical insurance cover, would now have options to
choose from. Until recently,
Diabetes Safe from Star Health Insurance was the only specialized comprehensive
health plan available for people suffering from this ailment. Now, another
stand alone health insurer, Apollo Munich Health
Insurance (AMHI) is all set to the offer 65 million diabetic patients in India with
another option called Energy--a specialized plan for individuals living with
diabetes mellitus 2 and/or hypertension. The product will initially be available in eight cities
from December 16, before being rolled out nationally next year.
"Energy is a comprehensive wellness
plan that not only covers you in case of hospitalization but also provides a
health eco-system to help manage your health better and also rewards them with
special offers from health partners to help aid and achieve overall well-being,"
says Antony Jacob, Chief Executive Officer, Apollo Munich Health Insurance.
Apart from these two,
there is a critical illness plan from ICICI Prudential, Diabetes Care, which gives
a lump-sum payment on diagnosis of any one of the six critical illnesses listed
under the policy that diabetic patients are prone to.
Energy Vs Diabetic
Safe
BASIC FEATURES: The plan will provide comprehensive hospitalization
coverage from day one without having to serve a waiting period clause. While Diabetic Safe from Star Health offers coverage
up to Rs 5 lakh, Apollo Munich 's plan has sum insured options up to
Rs 10 lakh. Also, the policy comes with a lifelong renewal option and has no
sub-limits or additional loading of premium at renewal post a claim. The policy
covers pre and post-hospitalization costs as well.
Diabetic Safe, on the
other hand, has a sub-limit of 2% of sum insured on boarding and room charges
subject to a maximum of Rs.2500 per day in Class A cities and Rs.1250 per day
in other locations and can be renewed up to 70 years.
Both policies require you to take a pre-acceptance medical
screening. The Diabetic Safe
policy from Star Health does not
accept cases where the patient has already developed complications of diabetic
retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy leading to chronic renal failure and/or
diabetic foot ulcer. Chronic cases may get rejected by Apollo Munich as well.
"While accepting an
individual we would evaluate the current health status and determine whether
the health risk is acceptable under the policy. Some of the factors that may
determine our decision will include whether any complication has already
manifested itself or not as per our underwriting guidelines," says Jacob.
ADD-ON BENEFITS:
The new product from Apollo Munich has some fancy
features that were not available in existing plans for diabetic patients. The
product offers a health coach who personally monitors, advises and reminds a
customer of important health milestones. It includes an online web portal which
enables the customer to track his health, maintain records of his diagnostic
reports and get the latest updates on his health. The insurer also gives
customer to a 'health market place' where they will be offered discounts on
health merchandise, pharmacies, health foods, medical equipment's like gluco meters,
etc.
